*2012 SEMINAR SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT*

IPRI-Africa was formed to foster awareness on intellectual property rights,
as well as train the legal fraternity excellence and professionalism in the
area of IP.

That is why IPRI-Africa will award* partial scholarships* based on
achievement and experience in the field of intellectual property.

*Date: August 6 – 10, 2012 (Monday – Friday) Application Deadline: July 6,
2012*

*To qualify* for the partial scholarship, applicants must have a legal
background with working experience in a law firm, judiciary, public
service, diplomatic mission, civil society organization, an NGO, or
government institution.



This seminar is *suitable *for lawyers/advocates, judges, policy makers,
parliamentarians, employees from IP institutions, academicians and other
interested stakeholders from both public and private sector. Law students
and recent graduates are encouraged to apply.



All interested and qualifying participants are encouraged to apply for the
partial scholarship by submitting:

1. A completed application (Attached for your reference)

2. An essay of not more than 200 words explaining the reason for
attending an IP seminar.



*Tuition*

Regular tuition fees without scholarship: $900

*Partial scholarship award up to: $400*



*Lunch, tea, refreshments, receptions, IPRI-Africa certificate, course
materials (soft and hard copy), links to legal updates on IP will be
provided for free.*



*Some of the topics to be addressed:*

· What copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets and patents are;

· Other types of IP rights like utility models, research,
scientific, IT innovations and geographical indications our laws

should specifically provide for and how to do that;

· How to get, protect and defend these rights nationally,
regionally and internationally;

· Legislative drafting skills for parliamentarians, drafters of
bills and policy makers;

· Negotiating, drafting and management of IP contract skills for
every lawyer;

· What happens when IP is distributed via various means and the
doctrine of fair use;

· How to attain international harmonization of IP laws;

· What copying is allowed and what is restricted, what to do about
violations, international legal models and more

specific sets of laws for Africa, USA, UK, and Asia; and

· How to raise awareness in the local population in the realization
of IP rights; and

· IP litigation, prosecution, licensing, research and development.

*Main Speaker: Professor Aman Gebru*

Professor Aman Gebru is a Lecturer at Haramaya University, College of Law.
He is a professional trainer in IP, law, policy and social research.
Previously, he served as the Director at the Social Justice Center, and
also interned with UNICTR. He is an expert in legal research, writing and
teaching. His major concern is IP in the African perspective. He has an
LL.M in Policies and Laws of Intellectual Property from the University of
Washington, School of Law, Globalization & Development from the University
of Warwick School of Law, UK and LL.B (honors), Law from Haramaya
University College of Law. He was awarded a Distinction on paper submitted
for course: 'Global Pressure for the Harmonization of IP rights over Plant
Varieties and Potential Effects on Food Security in Ethiopia in the
Development Context'. He is associated with Intellectual Property
Professionals and Leadership for lawyers.

*Course Advisor: Professor Gordon Wendy*

Professor Gordon is a Professor of Law at Boston University. She is
renowned for her application of philosophy and economics to copyright and
for her work on fair use, she has published on four continents and speaks
to audiences all over the world. Professor Gordon’s honors include serving
as a Fulbright scholar, a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at Oxford’s St.
John's College, a resident at the Rockefeller Foundation retreat in
Bellagio, and a visiting fellow at Oxford’s Programme. Her scholarship has
been cited in three opinions of the U.S. Supreme Court. She has twice
served as the Chair of the AALS Section on Intellectual Property. She has a
B.A. with distinction in all subjects, from Cornell University and a J.D.,
from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She is interested in
copyright; trademark; unfair competition; legal theory; property theory;
restitution; torts; law & economics.
