Masters of Social Work
By Hybrid and Distance modes
Masters of Social Work (MSW) degree provided at OUT is a demand driven program aimed at promoting the professional
growth of social works in Tanzania. The Department has been offering this degree since 2007 through evening and
distance modes. In the academic year (2012/13) the MSW classes will be conducted through hybrid and Distance [ODL]
modes. Hybrid entails intense face to face teaching for one week every month there after teaching online via the moodle
platform involving online interaction between students and lecturers.
This is a one year program for students with social work background, and two years for students with no social work
background. Candidate with no background on social work will have to undergo one year postgraduate Diploma in social
first before being admitted in the MSW degree program.
MODE OF DELIVERY
The MSW will be offered in HYBRID and ODL modes. For the HYBRID Mode, courses are offered both in face to face and
on line a modality which provides room for students to acquire both competencies and knowledge for the specialized
and advanced social work practice. The face to face sessions will take place in four zones (i.e. Arusha, Dar es Salaam,
Mbeya and Mwanza). Students from the nearby regions will be served by these zonal centers.
For the ODL mode, courses are offered as per OUT Master’s Degree Program regulations.
THE FOCUS OF MSW AT OUT
Masters of Social Work is divided into two main areas, that is, the core and electives courses. The combination of these
courses prepares students to work with diverse population and issues. Table 1:1 below indicates distribution of core and
elective courses for the program.

FEE STRUCTURE
The fees for the program include the tuition fee, books, research and dissertation production. The fee for HYBRID mode
is 4 million while the fees for ODL mode will follow the rate of the university for MA ODL.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
• Applicants for a Masters of Social Work is required to have a good first degree/advanced diploma in social work with
at least upper second class from a recognized higher learning institution.
• Candidates with Post Graduate Diploma in Social Work will have an added advantage
• Candidate with no social work background (first degree in social work) will have to undergo a one year post graduate
diploma before they are admitted in the Masters of Social Work.
AWARD
Candidates, who successfully complete the required units and dissertation, shall qualify upon approval by Senate of the
Open University of Tanzania, for the award of Masters of Social Work degree.

aims at enabling students to empower clients who are vulnerable opposed and living in poverty. Fundamental to the

contribute to and address problem in the living process.
It aims at preparing students for advanced direct professional practice with individuals’ families, households, groups,
organizations and communities’ students are expected to learn the clinical organizational, policy and administrative skills
necessary for promoting social and economic and enhance the quality of life for all people through agency based,
culturally sensitive advanced professional practice.
